Tile Calculator

How many tiles you'll need, with the right wastage allowance for your layout — built for DIYers.

How this works

Tiles come in fixed sizes, so you'll almost never get a perfectly whole number to cover your space — cuts, breakages and pattern matching all eat into your count. This works out how many tiles to buy, with enough spare that you're not stuck mid-job waiting on a delivery.

Area to tile

Grab a tape measure — roughly is fine.

Layout & cutting allowance

How you're laying the tiles affects how much extra to buy.

Which tile size suits this room:
Most tile sizes will work well in a room this size — 300×600 or 600×600 are popular, low-waste choices.
Why wastage matters: cuts around edges, breakages, and offcuts from pattern-matching all use up tiles that never make it onto the floor or wall. Straight lays waste the least; diagonal and herringbone lays waste more because almost every edge tile needs an angled cut.

Buy it all at once: tiles are made in batches (dye lots), so a box bought later — even the same product — can be a slightly different shade. Buying everything up front, including the spares, avoids a mismatched patch if you need an extra tile down the track.

This is a rule-of-thumb estimate — always round up rather than down, and check your supplier's return policy on unopened boxes before over-ordering by a lot.
